AAUW Santa Ana-Orange May, 2010 Newsletter AAUW California State Convention occurred this weekend of May 1 in San Romano. Kim DeBroux and Sharon Gomez are attending. Kim is one of the presenters. Kim DeBroux will give us a report of the AAUW California State Convention at our branch meeting Saturday, May 8 at 9:30 a.m. at the Villa Park City Council Chambers. The conventions communicate the current priorities and activities of AAUW on the national and state levels. Achievements of the branches are highlighted; strategies are shared.Hope you come to listen to Kim’s account of this on Saturday. Sharon Gomez has tirelessly been recruiting new members to our branch. Please attend the branch meetings, approach new members and share one another’s interests. Friendly interchange draws persons to remain involved in our AAUW branch. Joyce Ireland and Maria Solis Martinez have been performing their coordination of Tech Trek in an outstanding fashion. With their committee of interviewers (Carolyn Kaufman, Alice McCullough, Teresa Saldivar) they have chosen 4 girls with alternatives to attend Tech Trek at UCI from July 18 through July 24. Our website master, Lee Salazar, reminds to go into our AAUW Santa Ana-Orange website by entering: www.aauw-orange.org. Lee has also instructed officers how to log in and edit, update articles. Our membership treasurer Norma Wirta reminds us that it is time to mail in our regular $80 annual dues to her ( A life member pays $31; a dual member pays $15). Make checks out to AAUW Orange Branch. Address envelope to Norma Wirta, 4082 Santa Anita St.; Orange, CA 92865. Our Branch has been sponsoring a girl scout troop. Christina Duron, Carolyn Kaufman, and Sara Murrieta have been its leaders for 2 ½ years. The three feel very proud of the girls’ development in accord with Girl Scout goals. However these three leaders are now ready to give up their posts to some others in the branch who would enjoy taking up the leadership roles in August, 2010. If you feel so inclined, please talk to Sara or Carolyn. Branch members have been supportive of our Girl Scout activities: Gloria Wildman has volunteered as a leader when a regular leader could not. Sharon and Bob Gomez took the girls to the museum and to lunch. They organized a garage sale in their front yard that benefitted the troop. Sharon had the girls over to her home for High Tea and a class in jewelry making. Sharon brought 2 sewing machines and an ironing board to the Scout meeting to teach the girls how to sew on their Girl Scout badges and patches. Bonnie and Carter Sharp had the girls come to their home for an evening in their hot tub and barbequed hot dogs and s’mores. Bonnie came twice to the scout meeting to give personal health classes to the girls. Sue Guilford organized an outing of preparing camp food at the park. Maria Solis Martinez gave the girls classes on the U.S. flag and another on women in history. Maria also accompanied the girls on some of their outings and has gifted them with several individual items for scout activities. Throughout the duration, Carolyn and Dean Pierce, and Bonnie Sharp have faithfully donated aluminum cans for the troop’s treasury. Carolyn Kaufman’s daughter provided a day in Disneyland for the girls. A MANA friend, Eva Lombardo came and gave a class on hygiene to the girls. For the last 2 years Eva has given private tutoring weekly to one of our girl scouts who has benefitted immensely from that contact. Two of our girl scout mothers assisted us in driving and chaperoning the girls on outings and at our cookie sale booths. Our Girl Scout Cookie sale would not have been successful without AAUW members. Thank all of you who helped us sell and who purchased Girl Scout Cookies. With the money in the Girl Scout account the girls are going to the Orange County Performing Arts’ Lion King and to a day at Knott’s Berry Farm. One of our last year’s Girl Scouts is going to be one of our Tech Trek girls this August at UCI. Carolyn Kaufman our “Sunshine Chair” is sending a get-well card in our name to Betsy Ross Miale who had a serious fall at her church and is convalescing at home not being able to walk, stand, or sit much.
